Meal with ghosts.. Shadows: horror-themed restaurant in Riyadh

Take a meal with a ghost companion or sip your drink facing a real-looking skeleton surrounded by reddish glassy walls. This is not a fictional scene from a horror movie, yet a real restaurant theme you can get to experience at Shadows restaurant, which opened in Riyadh city boulevard at the beginning of Riyadh season. Bader Al-Mutairi, the restaurant’s manager, said, "On every table, there are zombies or ghosts”. The restaurant is keen on setting a terrifying environment not only using food utensils but also through loud music and the 4 different shows taking place hourly. Al-Mutairi added that the restaurant organizes sporadic horror shows with the help of their 24 actors whose responsibilities vary between dancing on the stage or wandering around the place in between the tables to get in direct contact with the guests or terrify them. The 10-minute shows present 4 different themes: zombies, ghosts, madmen, and clowns, according to Al-Mutauri. Customers get to dance and play with the so-dressed zombies and ghosts before a break interval starts between each show and another where the dimmed lights get turned on. In addition to the terror-filled ambiance, Shadows restaurant offers a unique food experience as the platters are served very hot on zombie-shaped trays, Al-Mutairi added. Also, red drinks are served in cups that give the illusion of blood-filled cups as well as the one-eyed woman shape used to decorate burger sandwiches. “Even the ordering process encloses a terrifying experience; the QR code is scanned from a skull shape to order one of the six offered dishes”. Due to the interest in the place and COVID precautions, a prior reservation through the mobile app is required for at least two individuals with a minimum price of 160 USD while a reservation would get automatically canceled after a 20-minute delay, Al-Mutairi added. “We had to systemize the entry process in order to guarantee to provide high-standard services at our operational hours, 8:30 pm to 1 am”. Al-Mutairi said that in a short time the restaurant became popular with businessmen, actors, and social media influencers who enjoy the customary frightening experience and document it through photography and videos.
